Missing A Dental Cleaning Can Be Risky Business

More than 100 million people miss their 6 month cleanings, in the fear that they will have to end up getting more work done. What they fail to realize is that the more you delay your cleaning, the higher the chance of a dental infection.

Dentists are able to see and follow small signs of any potential problems such as cavities when you come in for routine checkups and when you come into the office in regards to a toothache, it is a sign that it is already too late and damage has been done. When you first come in for your cleaning, the hygienist checks your mouth with a mirror for any possible red flags. Cavities can be difficult to notice, especially because they start out small. By the time you can see a cavity, it will most likely need to be treated with a filling. It is crucial to come in for at least an annual checkup because dentists can see any sign of a problem before the patient actually starts to experience any negative symptoms. One big thing that dentists look for is any sign of a cavity formation, in which dentists can see every 6 months if one is forming or not, and be able to prescribe fluoride toothpaste to slow the development or fill in a cavity before it develops and the patient then needs a crown. Crowns not only cost thousands of dollars but can be a painful process that could have been solved if patients go in for routine checkups and only spend a small percent of that for a filling or even yet fluoride. Not only will patients have to spend more on fixing their teeth, there is also a medical risk that comes with it such as tooth decay from plaque build up. Tooth decay is asymptomatic, and people assume that their teeth are clean.

While we may practice proper brushing and flossing techniques, we sometimes aren’t able to remove all of the plaque. When you come in for a dental cleaning, any trapped debris and plaque are removed with special tools known as scaling. Whereas if you continue to let plaque build up, your teeth can be stained

Additionally, when you get a fluoride treatment it will help in fighting off any future bacteria and plaque.

Problems That Can Develop When You Don’t Go To Your Cleaning:
  • Oral cancer- Every time you have your teeth cleaned, dentists are doing an inspection by looking for swollen or red areas, ulcerated areas and anything that looks out of the ordinary.
  • Gum disease- Most don’t know that symptoms such as bad breath, bleeding while brushing, or red gums could be symptoms of gum disease. Gum disease can progress and lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
  • Tooth decay– What can start with a cavity can quickly lead to tooth decay from leaving a cavity not treated with a filling or even a crow and will have to be removed.

If you have dental insurance you should be taking advantage of the cleanings that are included because many insurance plans cover dental cleanings and exams twice a year with no additional costs.

Regular cleanings are the way to prevent toothaches, rotting, and gum infections. It is crucial that your dentist checks your overall oral health. Getting your teeth cleaned twice a year is a smart venture towards your dental health and general wellbeing. What’s more, saving your teeth is the best investment that you can give them!
