Teeth Cleaning: What Happens?

Teeth cleaning is an essential part of oral hygiene. This is a process performed by a dental hygienist or other dental professional. It takes about 30-60 minutes and involves several steps that aim to clean the teeth and gums. Many people have a fear of visiting the dentist office for cleanings but this can be damaging to the teeth in the long run. Teeth cleanings at Dental Made Easy are straightforward and safe. Understanding what takes place during a cleaning will help in easing any anxieties and give patients a comfortable experience.

Teeth Cleaning Process

The first step in the teeth cleaning process is examining a patient’s mouth using a small concave mirror. This is to check for any signs of oral problems like cavities, tartar or inflamed gums. Doing this check allows for the hygienist to be aware of what to focus on the duration of the cleaning. Any concerning issues found may require the hygienist to alert the dentist to examine a patient further.

Following this is the removal of plaque and tartar off of the teeth using a scaler. The hygienist scrapes near the gum line and the surface of the teeth with this tool. Depending on how much is present on the teeth will determine how many times it would need to be used in a particular area. This is why brushing and flossing is important outside of the dental office so that tartar does not form. Tartar cannot be removed at home and only by a dental professional.

Cleansing & Polishing

After any tartar and plaque has been cleared away, the teeth are cleaned with a gritty toothpaste called prophylaxis paste. The toothpaste is applied using an electric brush that thoroughly scrubs away any debris left behind and deep cleans. This is to polish the teeth nicely and then finish off with flossing.

The final step in the teeth cleaning process is applying a fluoride treatment. The purpose of this treatment is to strengthen and protect your teeth from cavities until your next teeth cleaning. There usually are options to choose from what flavor you prefer. For about a minute, the fluoride is left on the teeth before being spit out.

Cleanings are to be done every six months to ensure that your smile is at optimal health. If you are due for teeth cleaning, call us or visit one of our Dental Made Easy offices today! We make teeth cleaning easy!
