National Dental Hygiene Month

Did you know that October is National Dental Hygiene month? To celebrate we want to highlight the best ways to maintain your oral health and hygiene!

1. Brush and Floss Daily

You already know this, and we hate to be repetitive, but YOU MUST BRUSH AND FLOSS YOUR TEETH! This is the simplest, yet most effective way to maintain your oral hygiene. I four not sure how to brush or floss properly check out two of our previous posts on the topic.

2. Visit your Dentist Twice a Year

Regular professional cleanings are an important step to take in maintaining your oral health. Sometimes there are areas of the tooth’s surface that we miss or our that our brushes just can’t reach. This is why its important to get deep cleanings twice a year. Your dentist has the right tools to make sure that your teeth are spotless.

Going to the dentist is also important for thew examination. The earlier a cavity or any other dental problem is discovered the better it is. The dentist will be able to spot any dental abnormalities and get them fixed, before they become worse.

3. Replace/Clean Your Toothbrush

Keeping your tooth brush clean and fresh is a very important step in maintaining your oral health. Dirty toothbrushes that are not cleaned or stored properly can harbor mold and other bacteria. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air-dry until using it again. Try to keep it separate from other toothbrushes in the same holder to prevent cross-contamination. Don’t routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast.

Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric or battery-operated toothbrush every three months — or sooner if the bristles flay or become irregular.
